As the winds of change blow this season, are there relationships that need to blow alongside them? Who are the "iron" friends in your circle who sharpen you and who you sharpen-- even with just a two minute chat? On the other hand, is there someone who you still allow in your circle who habitually "unalives" your creativity with a sarcastic side eye?

If you look around your friendship circle this fall season and see lots of crinkly leaves, acknowledge that gracefully and make a decision about those relationships. As a reminder, look for theses signs to help you reevaluate your inner circle. A good friend:

  • Keeps it honest with you even when it's a difficult discussion

  • Doesn't gossip about you

  • De-escalates drama

  • Sticks around especially when life gets rough

  • Celebrates you

  • Inspires you

  • Helps you think positively

  • Communicates thoughtfully

These may seem super basic at first glance. But that's the point.  These reminders provide a grounded perspective in current times. Social media, for example, can heavily impact how you perceive your relationship circles. Sometimes we give more mental weight to a netizen's liking or commenting on a post than deserved--often when that person is pretty much a stranger at best.

You can also use these reminders to reflect on how you yourself have been engaging in friendships. Some friendships don't thrive because it's time to water them. Nurturing relationships goes both ways.

Leave a comment, share your thoughts, and cheers to healthy friendships this fall season and beyond!
